Brookdale Expands Real Estate Holdings With Welltower Deals
Brookdale Senior Living acquires 17 communities and plans to buy 30 more from Welltower, cutting long-term lease exposure.
Brookdale Senior Living Inc. announced Monday it has completed the acquisition of 17 senior living communities and reached an agreement to purchase 30 additional leased communities from real estate investment trust Welltower, accelerating the company's push to own rather than lease its properties.
The Tennessee-based operator, traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker BKD, said the back-to-back transactions align with a stated strategy to expand direct real estate ownership while reducing long-term lease obligations that have historically weighed on the company's balance sheet.

Terms of the 30-community agreement were not detailed in the announcement, but Brookdale characterized the deal as mutually beneficial for both parties, suggesting Welltower also gains strategic value from the divestiture of the leased portfolio.
